Siesta 2024

The Scallywompus Siesta Half Marathon, 10K & 5K event takes place at the end of the week-long Fiesta celebration in San Antonio, Texas.

As everyone arrived to Mission County Park on race morning, it was pouring rain. The Siesta event was “rain or shine” however there was a severe thunderstorm in the forecast so there was a delayed start for the half marathon, with the possibility of a cancellation to ensure everyone’s safety.

“Come for the Party, stay for the Race?” Wait, what? Scallywompus had to do things a little differently for this year’s event. So needless to say, as more and more friends gathered… the party got started early! 🥳

And once the Dulce Vida Tequila vendor showed up… the party really got started! 😜 There were actually several vendors in attendance and it was their time to shine! ✨

Everyone on the Scallywompus team worked together to ensure a great time was had by all during the storm. Under the shelter of the parks largest pavilion they continued with updates as the thunder, lightning and heavy rain continued. ⛈️

They even held a pull-up competition which was very exciting and the SUPERSTAR was this small but MIGHTY girl that flexed her strength and rocked the pull-ups! 💪🏻 Everyone’s cheering was louder than the thunder!

In keeping with the Fiesta theme, our friend Courtney and her husband Curtis had their daughters beautiful and elaborate Fiesta trains on display. They had designed and hand-sewn them themselves. 💖

We gathered Team RWB for an awesome group photo! What a turnout! 🦅🇺🇸❤️

With an original start time of 7:30am the half marathon finally got underway at 8:50. It was still raining but the thunder and lightning had subsided.

I got a quick start line selfie 🤳 with Woody before the start!

And off we went, for a 13.1 mile Splash & Dash. 💦

We started the course with a left turn from the park and ran the 5K race route first.

The 5K route stayed along the San Antonio River but thankfully it was higher ground so the course, although soggy, was not flooded!

The 5K event started while we were out on the course so we passed those runners as we made our way back towards the park.

It was nice to see friends taking on the 5K.

After the 5K stretch of the race we passed the park and continued in the opposite direction along the river until our race path was completely submerged forcing us to detour.

Our detour took us through a park where we traversed through mud and fallen branches.

Then we ended up back on course and crossing some long, shakey wooden bridges that creaked and moved as we ran over them.

We passed these beautiful sculptures designed and created by Contemporary Belgian artist Arne Quinze which form a “portal” between the River and Mission San Juan. They are called “Whispers” because they “speak” to each other with their movement and color.

We crossed over more bridges but they were sturdy and quiet.

Raul and Cannoli greeted us near the turnaround with hydration.

This road was impassable for vehicles and thankfully we didn’t have to cross it either.

Oh Dam! The front fender of a car was washed up on the side of the dam. 😧

As we made our way back towards the home stretch, we had to hike/slosh up a muddy, grassy hill to bypass the flooding and then we were just a quarter mile from the finish line.

It wouldn’t be a Scallywompus race without an Epic afterparty so of course the party was still going strong! 🎉 There were awesome double-sided finisher medals, plenty of food, drinks and rockin’ tunes. 🕺🏻 Awards were given and everyone danced and celebrated!

It was a rough course with the flooding and the detours but maybe the 2 hour pre-race party (and the tequila) actually helped. 🥰 I was glad to have crossed another finish line and celebrate with the runfam. ❤️ I’m so thankful for the Scallywompus Team and all they did to brave the storm and keep this event going strong. 🙏🏻
